Brady Shew: Newborn Photography Denver

It’s been so fun watching my business grow and evolve into a place that includes so many new people! A few weeks ago I got a call from a lovely woman, Dora, that used to coordinate weddings.  She and I worked together more than 5 years ago on a wedding but hadn’t been in touch since then.  She was recently re-introduced to me by another friend of mine who is hiring me to do some product photography for a new venture he is involved with.  When Dora found out I was now photographing babies and families she sent my name to her friend, Becky, that just had a new baby.  And just like that, I had a new client!  It really is a small world.  A few days later I met Becky and her adorable family on a beautiful spring morning at their home and was able to capture some very sweet family moments including the star of the show, newborn baby boy, Brady Shew.

Brady’s 3 year old big brother, Andrew, was less interested in the photo shoot and more interested in showing me his car, getting books read to him by daddy, and playing on his slide in the backyard, but I managed to grab a few sweet moments with him too.  I know it might seems by looking at my finished images that photographing babies and children is easy, but I assure you, it is not.  Spend 10 minutes photographing a 3 year old and then see what you think.  ;-)   How do I do it you ask?  I put my camera on continuous mode and keep my finger on the shutter!  Seriously, a child’s expression changes in the blink of an eye.  If I’m too slow, I miss it.  And you can’t “make” a 3 year old (or most small children for that matter) do what you what YOU want them to do.  I have found the better way to approach it is to let them do what they do and shoot fast.

I loved meeting this sweet little family and I’m sure I will be back in a few months once Brady get’s a little bigger for more baby and family photos.  Thank you to the Shew family for inviting me into your home to capture these special memories for you.  I look forward to seeing you all again soon.  And thank you to Dora for passing my name.  And thank you to Brendan for re-introducing me to Dora.  And thank you to the Universe for always providing.  I am a lucky girl.

The Adorable LuLu: Nine Months Young

What an amazing time I had with this beautiful, fun and loving family in Winter Park, Colorado, for some amazing family & baby photography with the always precious LuLu. I can’t say it enough; I Love, Love, Love when clients become my good friends. I’m incredibly fortunate to have a job that allows me to meet and really get to know some fantastic people. As the wedding photographer of Kate & Mike’s big day, I got to know them both and saw what a special couple they were. I find that it is easy to develop these relationships when photographing such intimate and personal photography. I always have a blast and enjoy spending time with all of my clients, and becoming friends with them is a huge additional bonus to my profession- one that I like take to take full advantage of :)

Kate and Mike, maybe you can have another baby for me to photograph?? ;) Thanks for the amazing time in Winter Park  Love you all!

Flying to Sun Valley

One of my life goals is to someday get my pilots license.  Anytime I have an opportunity to fly with my parents and I’m available, I will take it!  I didn’t have a wedding over the 4th of July weekend this year so I was free to fly with them and my sister, Jesse, to visit our family in Sun Valley, Idaho.  My cousin, Marron, was visiting from New Zealand with her two adorable little boys, Josh and Rafe.  I hadn’t seen them since Josh was 8 mo. old.  It was so great to see her, my aunt and uncle, and getting to know those little kiwi second cousins of mine was a treat!

We started the trip at 6 am out of the Fort Morgan airport-Idaho bound. The flight was amazing.  We actually flew through a full rainbow circle near the continental divide.  It was crazy beautiful. (Sorry no photos, it happened too fast!)  We had brilliant, clear (and mostly smooth) skies all the way.  We took a short detour to fly over Jackson Hole and by the Grand Tetons.  I went to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone a couple of years ago on vacation, so the scenery was very familiar, but seeing it from the air gave me a whole new perspective!  This earth is truly an incredible place.

We went to the local Rodeo on the fourth and the little guys dressed up like cowboys to go mutton’ bustin’.  If you’ve never seen mutton bustin’ first hand, you are definitely missing out.  It’s hysterical!  And yes, it seems like a little bit of child abuse and animal abuse rolled into one- the kids get so scared. (Who can blame them?!!)  They mostly ALL cry.  The sheep almost certainly rolls over on them…. but I guess it probably feels like a big fluffy mattress rolling on you.  (At least that’s what the adults like to believe!)  But, it is so dang funny! And, if those little mutton busters are the same kiddos that become the bronco and bull riders, then I would say it definitely builds ones courage and strength (either that or it causes brain damage-it might be a toss up) because seeing the bucking broncos and bulls up close is INTENSE and scary.  I would honestly be terrified to be on the back of one of those massive animals!  And if you are wondering if they get hurt, the answer is YES.  Check out the series at the end of the guy getting his face stomped on by the bull. The whole rodeo experience was fascinating. And so fun to photograph!

Anyway, it was a short but great little trip.  Marron, I love and miss you guys.  I hope you move back to the states soon too!

Luke Allen: First Birthday Party!

Luke Allen recently had his first birthday.  His mommy, Heather Allen, is one of Denver’s top wedding planners and the owner of Table 6 Productions.  Matt and I have become friends with the Allen’s over the last few years and we were so happy we were able to make the party!  Of course I couldn’t not take the b-day boy’s photo with his cake… You only turn one once!
