“I’m all Your’s Babe”: Denver Boudoir Photography

It’s been a whirlwind of a wedding season for me this year and I am literally months behind on my blog posts.  But as I’ve been watching the photo shoots pile up in my inbox, I’ve been making my plans for how to get caught up. And now that my 2012 weddings have wound down and it is officially November, it’s time to get to it!  Be on the look out for weekly posts for the rest of this year and into next featuring to-die-for engagement photography, beyond gorgeous weddings, delightful maternity shoots, cutie-pie babies, adorable families, and last but certainly not least, stunning boudoir images.  I thought it would be fun to start with something sexy, so let’s kick off the catch-up with a gorgeous girl who had only the man of her dreams in mind during this boudoir session in downtown Denver.

I love it when my  clients bring props that visual enhance the images to “speak” to them or their loved ones.  This hot little mama did just that.  Not only did I have her natural beauty and some super sexy outfits to work with, but she also brought some blue label whiskey, a deck of Bear’s playing cards, a hockey jersey, and some poker chips.  She told me she wanted the images to be significant and to include all of her honey’s favorite things.  Of course, with her in the spot-light.  So that is precisely what we did.  We had a great time taking these photos and we started in the fab little sun-dress she arrived in, just to break the ice.  I have gotten really good a reading people- it’s one of my biggest strengths & I am convinced this is why I am able to create the kinds of images I do.  I could tell she was nervous and her hands were shaking a little as she showed me the things she had with her.  We started with her fully clothed and moved though her outfits in order from most covered to least.  I’ve found that is the best way to go because it gives my clients a chance to relax into the photography, get comfortable with me, and get their confidence sparkling.  Inevitably, the best images are usually taken closer to the end of the session, generally in the most risque outfits.  And considering the genre, it’s the whole reason to do a boudoir session instead of a portrait session.  Am I right?

Belly Photos Denver: Steph & Mike

Another past bride and groom back from more photo goodness-Yahoo! When Stephanie called to tell me she and Mike were expecting I told her about my babies first year collection and it was a done deal!  So here we go with the 1st of 7 photo shoots in the next year with their sure to be gorgeous daughter, Madilyn.  It was great to see them both again and their beautiful home in Highlands Ranch.  One of the best parts was walking around the house and seeing my photos from the engagement session and the wedding all over the place!  In hallways and bedrooms, it is obvious they have gotten good use out of the images we have made together.  I just love going to my clients homes and seeing that.  Second to coming back to me for more photos, it’s one of the highest compliments I can get.

One of the things that sticks out in my mind about Stephanie and Mike’s wedding day, and actually their engagement session too, were the bright blue skies that served as our dramatic backdrop!  And I mean bright blue skies, somehow more blue than usual.  ;-)   At their maternity session, some of my favorite images are the ones with the blue sky backgrounds.  Theirs too apparently!

Although Steph and Mike are still basically getting settled into their new space, the babies room is totally decked out and ready to go!  Stephanie said it’s her favorite room in the house right now.  I’m sure it will continue to be too because it’s absolutely adorable! All pink and girly and warm and cozy….  And though Steph claims that she and Mike are not exactly “project” kind of people (I can relate!),  they painted the striped wall themselves and it turned out awesome.  I was very impressed.  I can’t wait to go back next time!  Baby Madilyn is only a few weeks away (we think) from her debut on planet earth.  Can’t wait to meet you little baby girl.  And thank you Steph and Mike for loving my photos so much!

Outdoor Boudoir Photography: Go with the Flow

It’s interesting working with people from all different walks of life and in my line of work, especially with boudoir photography, I am given a unique opportunity to capture not only a subject’s outer beauty, but their inner beauty, their essence, as well.  There is a hidden beauty that each and every one of us has that is related to our hardships and our successes, to our mistakes and our lessons learned, to our failures and our victories in life.  And, there is something deep inside of me that tells me we each “choose” our path specifically so that we can learn the things that will have us evolve spiritually, emotionally, even physically, as human beings.

Empathy is defined as “the capacity to recognize and share feelings that are being experienced by another being.”  For as long as I can remember, I have always been a very empathic person, sometimes to a fault.  When I was younger, I used to confuse how other people were feeling for how I was feeling, and it was not such an easy trait to bear.  But, as an adult, I honestly think my empathic nature is one of the main reasons I am good at what I do, and also why I love it!   Because I have always been very sensitive to others, whatever energy is present in the space I am in, I can feel.  I feel the stress, the excitement, the impatience, the joy, and the anxiety in others- for better or worse- I feel it all.  Why does this matter?  Well, I think it matters because when I feel what other people feel, I can have compassion for them and make adjustments to my own behavior and energy.  When I feel what others are feeling, I am able to to either ‘feed the fire’ or ‘put it out’ with how I react to it.  This personal characteristic has come especially in handy as a wedding photographer, but it’s the same thing with boudoir, or any kind of portrait photography for that matter.

More often than not, I find that my people and life skills are more important than my technical background in creating images of people that really shine.  Images full of beauty, life and emotion come more from my ability to relate to others, than from any photography lessons I’ve had. Obviously, it is a “blend” of technical skills, creative vision, and people/life skills that has me able to do what I do, but I am convinced that without empathy, my work, no matter how technically perfect, would fall flat.  I have learned how to harness my empathic nature, and like my fingers play my camera buttons like a familiar instrument, it comes very naturally, and I rarely think about it in the moment.

I bring all of this up as a preface to the images taken at a recent boudoir session that had the potential to go terribly wrong!  When my model arrived for her photo shoot almost 2 hours late after driving all the way from Canyon City-getting pulled over, and lost-she was literally shaking.  And even though I had worked out keeping the hotel room a little longer once I knew she was going to be delayed, when I got a load of her and the stressed-out energy bubble she was engulfed by, I knew it was time to start problem-solving!  Long story short, she and her friend decided to stay the night in Denver, and we re-scheduled the shoot for the next day.  Ironically, because everything went wrong the day before, we moved the shoot out of a hotel room and were able to capture images that are edgier and more appropriate considering my models personal preferences and personality.  Instead of soft and sexy bedroom images that are more typical of a hotel room session, I was able to weave in the strong colors from my own house and nature (which I LOVE) to compliment this bold babe in all her bare brilliance. Poetic, right?  ;-)   I think these images are absolutely stunning and I am excited to share them.  The moral of this story??  Sometimes in photography (and in life), derailing the plan to go with the flow, is the best plan. And, beyond that, everything always works out exactly like it’s supposed too, even when it doesn’t feel good in the moment.  TRUST.  The universe has a way of working things out.

Angela & Ty: Colorado Maternity Photography

Two of my best friends in the world, Angela and Ty, are pregnant!!  Yahoo!  They will be giving birth to their first child, a little boy, this August, and I am beside myself with excitement!  For Angela’s birthday I decided to take her and Ty to my families cabin in Eldora for a special birthday dinner, which due to an electrical outage, was cooked and enjoyed by candlelight!  Yikes!  (If anyone knows anything about me, I am not the necessarily the greatest cook, but I am quite resourceful!  haha!) And, since Angela and Ty are both big fans of the gorgeous Colorado mountains, I thought it would be fun to photograph their maternity session outdoors as a birthday gift.  We had the most gorgeous evening session together with magic light- yummy! Thanks to Ryan, my wonderful lighting assistant, to Angela and Ty’s fabulous energy, and to our great friendship, we were able to create some truly gorgeous maternity images in a very short amount of time.

She might disagree with this statement, but Angela is my friend that ALWAYS looks amazing.  I would not expect pregnancy to be any different and it’s not!  She just glows…  And I can say the same for Ty.  Their excitement and love just poured out of their faces at each other like the river that flowed effortlessly behind them.  I always love playing with flare in my camera and sometimes it works out, but a lot of times it doesn’t.  I guess Angela and Ty are more than just beautiful–they are LUCKY too!  Check out the magical glow they have around them in some of the photos.  I am in love with these images of them!  Get ready readers for lots of Col(e)man baby photos coming soon.  This little boy will only be second to my niece, Alice, in terms of the most photographed baby…ever- haha!  Angela and Ty- love to you now and always.  I can’t wait to scoop that precious baby boy of yours up in my arms and kiss him all over.
