Maternity & Newborn Photography in Denver: Ava Valentine Gregorek

I met Christine and Mike in 2010 when they booked me to photograph their drop dead gorgeous wedding at The Ritz-Carlton Denver in the summer of 2011.  We had an easy and warm connection right off the bat and their wedding was one of the most gorgeous I have ever had the honor to be a part of.  After the wedding was over Christine and I stayed in touch and of course I was thrilled for her when I found out she and Mike were expecting.  I love it when my wedding clients turn into portrait clients, especially when it means I get to help them document the first year of their child’s life.  I’ve come to the conclusion that being booked for my babies first year collection by one of my wedding couples is the biggest compliment I can possibly get.  To me, it means they love their wedding photos so much that they want me back for more!

It was absolutely wonderful to see Christine and Mike together at the maternity photo shoot.  They were both so happy and so excited about the next chapter in their lives!  Baby Ava was born on December 6, 2012 weighing in at 7 pounds and 2 ounces and is absolute perfection. I can’t wait to get to know this darling baby girl and watch her grow up over the next year and beyond.  At our newborn photo shoot Ava was so calm and so sweet and I loved seeing her beautiful nursery too.  It was also fantastic to see Christine taking to motherhood like an old pro. She was so easy and natural with baby Ava, it was as if Ava had always been there.  Newborns always melt my heart and Ava was no exception.  We dressed her up in darling outfits and even got a few photos with her pup, already protecting his baby sis. That or he was merely expressing his dissatisfaction at getting knocked down a rung on the priority ladder.  ;-)   Thank you Christine and Mike for inviting me into your lives for another year of friendship and creating beautiful memories together.  We are on our way!

Maternity & Newborn Photography Denver: Keri, Ken & Stella Blair

One of my favorite things to photograph these days are newborns!  There is something so amazing and pure and perfect about a newborn baby.  It never gets old.  And no matter how many times I meet one, I am always surprised and fascinated by how tiny they are.  I especially love to photograph a newborn if I’ve also gotten to take maternity photos, like I did recently with Keri and Ken.  Generally I don’t do the maternity photos until near the end of the pregnancy, so I get so see and feel the sheer excitement of the expecting parents and take part in their last few days before baby.  It’s such a beautiful time and I haven’t met a pregnant woman yet that hasn’t been glowing and radiant and SO excited to welcome their child into this world. One look at Keri and Ken’s maternity images and you can see exactly what I mean.

Keri and Ken told me that Stella is their miracle baby because it wasn’t until they finally stopped trying to force the issue that Keri finally became pregnant with her.   It’s not the first time I’ve heard that.  Sometimes we humans have our own “agendas” that nature/the universe/God doesn’t fulfill in a timely matter. And the harder we press, the further away that desired outcome can seem.  I personally think it’s a matter of relaxing into the unknown and accepting that we are not “in control” as much as we would like to think we are.  Baby Stella is a prime example.  She wasn’t coming until she was good and ready, no matter what!  And trust me, she has presence!  I predict a powerful and amazing woman in that little tiny child for sure.

I am thrilled to have met another fantastic couple at a brand new beginning in their lives.  I can only hope that they love the photos as much as I do and that I will be invited back again and again to capture them and Stella as she grows into her big spirit.  Congratulations Keri and Ken! I am so happy for you.  Stella could not have chosen a more loving mom and dad.  You are all in for a wonderful adventure together! XO

Newborn Photography Denver: Laney Louise

Babies and dogs are both near the top of my “favorite things” list so when I get to photograph them together…  well, paint me happy.  The most recent addition to my portfolio is baby Laney Louise and her big brother, Moose, a beautiful and giant dog.  And as if that wasn’t enough, Laney’s mama had the most amazing baby headbands and hats I have ever seen.  Apparently Etsy is THE place to shop for specialized baby accessories. Thanks for the tip Kelly!Laney was a very good little baby model for me, and thanks to my hair-dryer trick I was able to get a really happy naked and sleeping baby for a few precious shots. The hair-dryer trick is a simple but powerful one.  And it’s not really a trick, it just requires a hairdryer (on a low setting) and a person to point it at the baby.  The white noise plus the warm air create a magical combination that puts a newborn at ease, and oftentimes, to sleep.  It works like a charm! If you think about it, it makes total sense…  I for one, LOVE, having my hair blow-dried.  I’m sure those babies love having their entire bodies warmed up too.

I like to photograph newborns sleeping whenever I can.  Of course, if they are awake, it’s nice to capture their eyes, but newborns obviously can’t do much except lay there and look cute.  If they are asleep they are easier to maneuver and pose.  When I first started photographing babies, I could never figure out how photographers got those great shots of naked sleeping newborns, because every time I got a baby naked they would wake up.  After lots and lots of shoots, I’ve learned what tends to work well is to feed the baby right before we start, so they have a full tummy, and take their clothes off before they fall asleep and wrap them in a soft blanket.  Then get the hairdryer going and slowly unwrap them.  As long as they stay warm and comfortable and their tummies are fully satisfied, they are like putty in my heads.  Sometimes my clients will also turn the heat way up in the room or the house.  This helps the baby a little but but makes everyone else really hot and sweaty, especially me!  I prefer to keep the room a more normal temp and use the hairdryer.

Born to Fly: Tanner John Rodrain

Erin and Dave are another of my favorite client-turned-friends couples.  I met them in 2008 when they hired me to shoot their wedding in Beaver Creek.  They loved their photos and working with me so much that I got to travel with them to Jamaica to photograph Erin’s sister’s destination wedding a year later. I love this family!  And not just because they took me to Jamaica.  ;-)   We bonded early on over our mutual interest in airplanes and general aviation, so when I saw their little babies nursery, all decked out for a baby aviator, I was not surprised.  What a perfect theme for this little boy’s room.  I really hope he’s not scared of heights!  I imagine he’ll be flying before he’s walking.

Tanner John Rodrian was born in practically the blink of an eye on April 27th and weighed 7 lbs 10 oz.  Erin said it was a fantastically easy birth but apparently Tanner was pretty mad about losing his warm dark cave because he screamed for about three hours straight his first night on earth.  Since then, he’s apparently accepted his reality and been nearly perfect in every way, even sleeping long periods at night.  And he must be all rested up because at our photo shoot he was awake and alert the entire time!  We even took a break to have a glass of wine and catch up hoping he would fall asleep so we could manipulate him into all kinds of cute and contorted newborn poses…  but he had a different idea.  In the end, we went with his way.

I’m so thrilled I got to photograph this gorgeous little boy’s debut images and a big congrats to the happy new Mom and Dad!  Tanner is such a lucky boy to have you both as parents.  Wherever he goes and whatever he does in this life, I know you will be there helping him fly. Let’s hang out again very soon!
