Brown Palace Denver Wedding: Johanna & John Michael

I couldn’t be more excited about posting this gorgeous Denver wedding at the Brown Palace on my website today.  I absolutely adore this couple and after their amazing engagement session, I knew we were going to have a blast together on their wedding day too.  We had a easy and instant connection from the get-go, and I was confident that they trusted me implicitly.  Because of that, I was able to capture some fantastic images of them being truly relaxed and in love.  They were more than excited and able to be their goofy-selves with me, which I truly believe is a wonderful formula for successful photography on a wedding day.

I have always been big fan of the bride and groom’s “first look” because I believe it gives couples a chance to spend more time together on their wedding day AND because the images we are able to capture during that time are always so amazing and dripping with emotion.  It’s not something I push on my couples, since I know that there are many couples that want to wait for the traditional moment of walking down the aisle to see each other for the first time that day, but when a couple is open to the idea, I am happy to encourage it!  From this point on I think I will use Johanna and John Michael’s images to show future clients what is possible with a first look.  The expressions and the energy of their first look photos literally give me goose bumps!  In my experience over the last decade, I have found that his kind of coverage is simply not possible during a ceremony.  First, because I can never get quite the right angle due to the ceremony set up, chairs, guests, etc.  It also goes too fast so that there isn’t any time for the couple to really drink each other in.  The first look is a private (well, semi-private including only the couple, myself and my second shooter) space to give the couple time to really see each other for the first time and to linger in that moment together.  Then we take a series of photos of the bride and groom together before the craziness of the wedding day and all of the guests takes hold.  It’s simply a magical part of the day and as usual, I am in love with the photos we got during Johanna and John Michael’s first look.

The Brown Palace was, as always, a gorgeous and classy venue for both the ceremony and the reception and I loved being treated as a guest right down to the delicious meal we were served for dinner.  Thank you!  We get really hungry working so hard all day long.  :-)   I also have to thank Julia Timmer, my amazing second shooter, who I adore beyond words.  We always work together so seamlessly and I am forever grateful for her talent and great energy that she shares with me and with my clients.  Bravo Julie!  You rock!

To Johanna and John Michael; you are one of the most stunning couples I have had the pleasure of getting to know.  You are perfect together and I hope our photographic relationship will last for years to come. I wish you all the happiness in the world and I hope you  love these images as much as I do.  MUWAH!

Colorado Wedding Photography at Spruce Mountain Ranch: Blizzardly Bliss

When I first met with Karter and Steve last fall, we talked about a beautiful spring day with an outdoor ceremony on the tennis courts and all the scenic places around Spruce Mountain Ranch in Larkspur CO for photo ops.  Of course, in March in Colorado there is a very real possibility that the weather will surprise you.  And as March 9th drew closer the weather forecast became more and more ominous.  I began preparing myself mentally for an entirely different scenario as the weatherman was calling for up to two feet of snow, icy roads, and full blown blizzard conditions.  I left about three hours early that morning to ensure I wouldn’t have any issues getting there, and in addition to my camera bags and lighting gear, I also packed my heavy winter coat, snow pants, a hat, gloves, and snow boots.  It was a good thing too, because Karter and Steve weren’t going to let a little (ok, a LOT) of snow upset their wedding day!  :-) They were both in wonderful spirits and were even excited about going out in the blizzard to take their couples photos after the ceremony.  It was quite the adventure! Not only did we all get blasted by snow in the face (and the lens) taking photos outside, but the van we were driving around in got stuck in a huge snowdrift and had to be pushed out by a tractor.  Literally, a big green tractor!

I was lucky to have the amazingly talented Sarah Fischer by my side as my second shooter and we had a fantastic time together with Karter, Steve, and both of their loving and lovely families.  I believe that it speaks volumes about a couple and their families when, given the treacherous conditions we were dealing with and the location of the wedding, only two guests out of about 130 didn’t make it due to the weather.  I have always been a bit of a snow bunny myself, so I was thrilled that this sweet couple from California were up to facing the cold temperatures and blowing snow to take some of the most unique bride and groom portraits I have ever had the opportunity to take.  The day was filled with lots of laughter and happy tears of joy; beautiful decor; and some of the most heartfelt speeches by friends and family that I have ever heard.  And even though it was one of the more difficult scenarios that I have ever personally faced in my wedding photography career so far, I am thrilled with the images that Sarah and I were able to capture.  It just goes to show you that given the right attitude, nothing can dampen the excitement and joy of a wedding day.

Karter and Steve, thank you from the bottom of my heart for choosing me to spend your wedding day with you documenting all of the serious and silly moments.  I know that it will be a day you will all remember forever and I hope that these images bring you right back to that extraordinary day every time you look at them.  I had an absolutely amazing time with you and want you to know that I believe you both deserve all the best life has to offer!  Congratulations again and thank you for your fantastic attitudes and adventurous spirits.  These images will certainly stand out in my portfolio for years and years to come.

Engagement Photography in Denver: Johanna & John Michael

I am absolutely taken with this engagement session that I photographed at Riverfront Park in downtown Denver a few weeks ago.  Johanna and John Michael are getting married this Saturday, March 30th, at the Brown Palace Hotel, and I could not be more excited about it.  We had a  fantastic time together taking their engagement photos and I have no doubt that their wedding will be equally as special. Right off the bat, it’s easy to see that they are both strikingly good looking.  But even more than that, their darling personalities and charming dispositions made them so much fun to be around and to work with.  I love it when my clients are so easy going and relaxed in front of the lens with me.  It makes posing and directing them almost effortless.  As we walked around the park looking for cool backdrops, we chatted easily about how they met and what they do and by the time we were done, we were like old friends hugging goodbye.  Their love and energy was totally contagious and I feel like it shines through in the images we created together.

My wedding line up this year is chalk full of darling couples like this and I feel so lucky to have so many clients placing their trust in my abilities to capture such a special and unforgettable occasion in their lives.  I can say without hesitation that I have one of the best jobs in the world and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  It’s couples like Johanna and John Michael that drive my passion to create and inspire, and I am eternally grateful that I have landed in the position I am in. Thank you Johanna and John Michael!  I can’t wait to spend one of the most important days of your life with you in just a couple of days.  I look forward to a life-long friendship full of beautiful moments frozen in time for now and always.

Destination Wedding & Destination Reception: Photography at Splendido, Beaver Creek CO

From the shining sea of Bora Bora where Katie and Kevin had their private destination wedding to the top of Beaver Creek mountain on a beautiful fall day, this couple certainly covered all their bases!  Unfortunately I was not invited to Bora Bora with them, but I did have the honor of photographing their gorgeous wedding reception at Splendido in Beaver Creek, CO where everyone had an amazing night full of delicious food and lots of wild dancing.  Heather Allen from Table 6 Productions was the coordinator extraordinaire for this intimate celebration with lots of fun details including old cruiser bikes and smore treats for all the guests. The amazing florals were done by the oh-so-talented Cindy Ollig at the Perfect Petal.  Add all of that to a spectacular blazing fall day and I was in photography heaven with nothing left to be desired in the visual candy department.

Before the party began, Katie and Kevin and I met and drove to the top of the mountain to take advantage of the fall colors and gorgeous Aspens. Katie was a true Colorado girl hiking around in the woods in her wedding shoes.  Now that’s my kind of girl! :-)   The three of us had an easy connection right off the bat and I’m thrilled with the darling images of this even more darling couple draped by an exquisite Colorado fall backdrop.  Fall in the Colorado Rockies is hands down my favorite time of year.

It’s nice to look back on my work and fall in love with my clients all over again.  Even though this celebration took place almost 6 months ago, looking at the images, it feels like it was yesterday. That’s the way I hope all of my clients feel too.  And even though I am behind in my blog updates, I assure you, everyone will get their moment in the spotlight!  Katie and Kevin, I hope these images bring you right back to your amazing night celebrating your marriage with all of your closest family and friends.  You truly know how to throw a great party!  I am so happy to have been a part of it.
